Digitalization & Innovation @ KOSTAL

“In modern cars we see a fusion of automotive and computer industry. KOSTAL focuses on this fusion point.” - Michael Weiß, KOSTAL Automotive Electrical Systems

On March 15 several UNITECHers set out for Sauerland to visit the Corporate Partner KOSTAL in Lüdenscheid, Germany. Kai Schrage and Henrik Bütow, employees of KOSTAL’s HR, had invited the UNITECHers to get to know each other in the KOSTAL headquarters.

The event was titled “Digitalization & Innovation @ KOSTAL”, and it got started with a presentation held by Dr. Ludger Laufenberg, President & CEO Automotive Electrical Systems.

Dr. Laufenberg explained in a fascinating way how digital transformation and innovation was tackled at KOSTAL. A very interesting session in which we could all understand a bit better how KOSTAL is competing with bigger and smaller opponents within the automotive market through constant innovation and technical advantage. It is vital to stay ahead!

After that session, the event continued with an impressive walk through the production facilities of KOSTAL. It was lead by the Operations Manager Dr. Fabian Bauhoff. During this walk, a lot of high-tech automated processes, like production with high-tech robots and self-driving material delivery cars, could be observed.

After lunch, Andreas Pirchner and Michael Weiß (engineers at KOSTAL), lead the whole group through the KOSTAL Show Room talking dedicatedly about different technical developments at the company. Special fragrances in modern cars or cameras which watch the driver are just some of the explained topics that we discussed during the visit. As many UNITECHers came up with concerns about security within modern cars, some time was spent on discussing this serious aspect.

After those interesting practical insights, KOSTAL employee Cornelius Wefelscheid gave an appealing presentation about Deep Learning in which every UNITECHer was able to learn something about this important topic of the future. Subsequently, KOSTAL gave the chance to talk to some employees in more detail over a coffee to learn more about the company, and future opportunities in it. Engineers of different areas like Automotive Industry and Power Electronics as well as HR employees took some time to answer questions.

The day ended with two hours of “Sauerländisch”-Bowling (Kegeln), which Mr. Schrage and Mr. Bütow had organized. This social event was a very nice conclusion of the visit at KOSTAL with a lot of fun whereby the day was reviewed and personal contact to Mr. Schrage and Mr. Bütow could be intensified. All in all, we as Local Chapters Germany, would like to thank everyone at KOSTAL who has made this event so successful, especially Mr. Schrage and Mr. Bütow for organizing the whole day.
