UNITECH student visit Caterpillar facility in Desford

Over 100 UNITECH students and staff visited the Caterpillar Visitor Centre at Desford in Leicestershire which took place as part of the 2015 Mid Term week activities hosted by Loughborough University.

Caterpillar's first major European facility was established in Leicestershire 60 years ago. Caterpillar's UK presence has grown rapidly in recent years, and the company exports more than 85% of the machines, engines and equipment produced here. With around 12,000 people, the UK represents the largest base for Caterpillar outside the United States.

Caterpillar formed a corporate partnership with UNITECH in 2013 to assist them in their aim of sustaining and developing a flow of exceptional engineering talent and providing a network of professional possibilities.

On Monday, 5th January, over 100 UNITECH students and staff visited the Caterpillar Visitor Centre at Desford in Leicestershire which took place as part of the 2015 Mid Term week activities hosted by Loughborough University. The aim of the visit was to provide UNITECH students with an introduction into the world of Caterpillar, with an insight into the corporate graduate scheme and other such opportunities within the global engineering giant.

During the visit to Desford, students were able to meet Caterpillar engineering staff, including graduate engineers and engineering managers, as well as gain hands on experience of the Caterpillar products that are designed at the Desford Facility.

Simon Collins, Future Talent Manager for Caterpillar in EMEA, presented to UNITECH students on the history of Caterpillar and the varying routes for graduates to enter the business. UNITECH students were also given the opportunity to discuss their experience on the programme as well as their internships with UNITECH corporate partners. “The students really seemed to enjoy the opportunity to experience our core products at first hand” Simon commented. “Of even greater value to them was the chance to meet Caterpillar engineers who were able to explain the roles they fulfil and the wide variety of careers available with the company.”
