LUC Germany: RUG Frankfurt: Seeking the sun at the Rhine
30 Jul 2011 in Alumni by Jan Reitz
July 30th, Mainz, Germany
After the first meeting of our brand-new Regional Unitech Group (RUG) Frankfurt taking place at the more eastern limits of the Rhine-Main area in Hanau, we focussed this event on the possibilities in the West, to take advantage of the city of Mainz and the Rhine river. Ten Unitech alumni, students and CP representatives meet at high noon at Mainz central station in order to grab some rental bikes and proceed to the popular grocery market taking place in the shade of the cathedral every Saturday.
Together we strolled along the market booths, enjoying the smell and look of all the fresh vegetables, cheese, meat and wine from the rural areas of the Rhineland and Palatinate regions. Our mission was to collect everything needed for a nice barbecue and we managed well to grab a nice selection of delicacies, with only some rays of sun missing in our bags.
Equipped like this we set out with our bikes for a quest along the Rhine towards the south to maybe discover some nicer weather down there. We followed the ancient roman paths along the riverside up to the village of Bodenheim where a nice barbecue spot was already waiting for us on the hills above the village and deep inside the vineyards. Preparing food was again a true Unitech action with everybody actively involved in putting together what we got at the market before. In the end, we could avoid the rain but despite our hopes the sun didn't show up at the sky. So after riding back to Mainz we adjusted climatic conditions ourselves enjoying some hot teas and cold drinks in one of the local bars before everybody left again for their hometown.
The next RUG event will take place in the heart of the Rhine-Main area in Frankfurt, some weeks after the GA in Göteborg, with more information to be announced real soon.
