UAA Symposium in Barcelona 2018 - Digital Ethics - Future of Society in a Connected World

With over 50 participants, including UNITECH Alumni from 13 out of the 15 UNITECH years, CPs, APs, Honorary Alumni as well as external guests, the UAA Symposium 2018 took place on 14th and 15th of April in Barcelona.

The weekend started with a conference around the exciting topic “Digital Ethics - Future of Society in a Connected World”. After an update of the UAA activities by Enric Vinyes and Daniele Simone, Agusti Faus and Valenti Canadell (both Alumni 2009) presented the chances and possibilities of the innovative network technology 5G for our society. Daniel Taube from SKF then introduced the topic of business ethics and especially the dilemma between speed and innovation of business on the one hand, but stricter rules and regulations on the other hand. Rules and regulations were also part of Philipp Reuschs presentation, a lawyer and external guest, who showed how the new asset "data property" can be managed and how the cyber resilience can be increased. Fabian Gasser (Alumnus 2011) took the audience back to the UNITECH roots: the engineering perspective. He illustrated that ethics is not only about philosophy but a lot about technology as well. The fact that ‘data can be equal to power’ was clear to the audience after Inés Labarta’s (Alumna 2009) presentation about innovative business models that are enabled by the right use of data. Last not least, Chiara Vigone (Alumna 2016) introduced the Carbon Footprint Challenge 2018 and demonstrated, how digitalization and sustainability can be matched.

After nine hours of countless interesting discussions, the evening programme started at Restaurante Dos Torres. To celebrate the UAA’s 15th anniversary, we started with an exclusive wine tasting with Pau Torres (Alumnus 2004), founder of ILUSIÓN+, and his wife Gina. This wine tasting was not only extremely delicious, we also support the fight against neurodegenerative disease as ILUSIÓN+ is an initiative to collaborate with several social initiatives through selling wine. After the wine tasting we enjoyed great Catalan food, before heading out in Barcelona’s nightlife.

On Sunday, a little smaller group learned a lot about the gothic part of Barcelona by joining a walking tour through the beautiful part of this city, before the event ended with a typical paella (needs at least 30 minutes and cannot be eaten alone).

Thanks to everybody who made the Symposium such a great event! We are looking forward to seeing everybody again at the Symposium next year 2019 in Milano!
