Hi, I am Geoffrey,

I am originally from Hong Kong, but I am doing a master’s degree specializing in automotive engineering at Loughborough University, England. Currently I am doing an internship at Supply Chain Innovation department at Infineon Technologies, specializing in EV market research for the semiconductor industry and EV battery repurposing solutions.

What attracted you to apply to the UNITECH programme?

The UNITECH programme has a very different approach compared to regular exchange programmes. Some might say studying in England from Hong Kong is already a massive exchange, but I think the international scope that UNITECH gives is much wider than just that, when you are spending the best moments as a student with people from 9 different European countries.

What did you enjoy most about your experience in the UNITECH programme, and how has the programme helped prepare you for the next steps in your career?

The fact of getting to know much more people than you would ever would in your study life is one of the enjoyments of the UNITECH programme. It makes me more open to try new things and more willing to immerse into cultures. This helped me to not only blend into a team easier in a foreign working environment, like for the internship and most possibly in my future career, also giving me an insight on how to manage a team with different ethnicities and cultures.

Where was your internship? Were there any challenges that you faced? How did you overcome them?

I did my internship with Infineon, which is based in Munich. One of the main challenges must be moving to a completely different environment with a massive language barrier for the first time. Although I have been to Munich before for travels, but moving and living there is a completely different story. Luckily some UNITECHers came along as well and we’ve helped each other to get use to the environment, now I am more used to Munich than I was compared to when I first arrived, and the language barrier is reducing as I am getting used to the German language.

What are some of the biggest trends you see in your industry, and how are you preparing for them?

Decarbonization and sustainability, two of the most discussed topics around the world of automotive engineering, how to make cars more environmentally friendly, reach climate neutrality, and how to promote a circular economy in the automotive industry. Apart from studies which sort of reflected these trends, one of the preparations as an automotive engineer is to embrace it and understand the difficulties that these trends are currently facing, to think out of the box, about solutions and developments that could help as a study path.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?

Be innovative and think out of the box. From the first automobile to the first electric ultra-high-performance supercar, the automotive industry is constantly about challenging limits, innovation, radical ideas. So just go out there and explore, put random thoughts and ideas on a drawing board, doesn’t have to be modest, but be creative. Finally, very importantly, network with more people in the field. You will never know what opportunities they might be able to provide.
